Optimum Gap Hear header

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.' 2 Timothy 1:7

If you are between the ages of 18 and 25, with an interest in music and looking for an opportunity to serve God with your gifts as part of a gap year, then Optimum could be the perfect opportunity. Viz-A-Viz Ministries is looking for Christians with a passion and a heart to reach out with the message of Jesus to young people who would never consider that God could change their life. As part of the Optimum Gap Year programme you will have the chance to join a team that will provide excellent training, using your musical and technical skills to equip you to share your faith and release your full potential for Him.

The strapline 'Let God bring out the best in you' aptly describes the year in which we believe God will really change you, strengthening your faith; challenging you in your walk with Him as well as enabling you to encourage others to consider whether God can make a difference in their lives too.

He never fails. Each person that joins the team grows and develops in ways they never imagined possible. Spending your gap year using your gifting in Music you will see God move in powerful ways in the lives of the young people you will meet over the year, encouraging them to discover Him and become his followers.

There is so much more to this gap year than you ever imagined and as you step out in faith you will see God answering your prayers and the Holy Spirit using you to meet the needs of those who you come into contact with, while developing your musical skills.

What will you let God do with your life?

MUSIC

Music has a massive ability to influence and communicate to young people so why not consider using your musical skills for God as part of our band Taste, helping young people to discover more about the God who loves them!

You would be involved in our schools ministry all around this country and abroad, sharing your music and talking with hundreds if not thousands of young people who have never heard the Gospel. Invited to a town by churches and Christian organisations you will have the opportunity to visit High Schools in the local area as a band; delivering RE lessons, music workshops and concerts. Although restricted in what we say while in school we are at freedom to share the gospel as part of the events that we deliver which is why it’s always important to encourage those that we meet to come to an event, which will be the final climax to the week, here young people are offered the opportunity to become Christians or take the next step in discovering more about the God who transforms lives.

Taste are also involved in running youth weekends and playing a key role in a number of Christian festivals around the country, where band members are given the opportunity to share their story and pray for young people that they meet.

We present you with a challenge, hard work, and loads of fun; you bring us your enthusiasm, musical skill and love for seeing young people set free for Jesus.

MUSIC

Our technical team support all of Viz-A-Viz Ministries' events, making them look good and sound even better as well as supporting the office’s technical needs.

We have opportunities for young people with skills in sound, lighting, video and computing work.  Skills in maintenance and making the best use of all available equipment is important, but more than this is your passion for God who will take any ability and enable it to shine for Him.  You would be an integral part of the evangelistic work of Viz-A-Viz Ministries.

Most of the year will be spent touring with the team who are on the road (for more detail see above) and our technicians have as much involvement on stage as behind the desk; everyone on the team has a story to tell and is given the opportunity to share it where appropriate. There will also be a level of involvement at both local and national events as well as participation in recording sessions at StudioX based in the ministry centre, with ‘hands-on’ experience alongside learning new technical skills.

WHERE WILL I LIVE?

For this gap year you would be required to move to Essex, where you would be placed with a host family who will provide a room for you and where you will live as part of their extended family. The work is tiring but rewarding which our host families understand and so they are very welcoming but they also have busy lives and so don’t anticipate being waited on hand & foot! These are very generous people who give up time, space and energy to have you in their home but often these relationships develop well beyond your year as you are ‘adopted’ into this new family.

Due to the tiring nature of the work we do make sure there are holiday opportunities for you to get back home to see your family as well as time off to rest and relax. While in Essex there will be training sessions, covering evangelism, schools work, leadership, discipleship and team-work as well as bible studies and team retreats.

WHAT WILL IT COST ME?

That’s a loaded question, isn’t it? In one way this year will cost you everything as you give your all to the God who gave his life for you! However there is also a financial commitment to this year to cover your expenses, a contribution to your hosts for feeding you and to enable you to have some pocket money to spend during your year. Having said this we don't expect you to have to pay for your time here out of your own money or savings. Most volunteers discover that their home churches are keen to support them through the year both prayerfully and financially and friends and family are keen to be involved in this side of your ministry too.

It’s a real encouragement when you see the money come in and as soon as you are accepted on the course you are at liberty to begin to raise money. We can give you all kinds of ideas but it will take some effort from you to make it happen. Funding generally comes in over the year you are with us but we recommend that you have your first £1000 by the 1st of September. Many people want to give by standing order and so the money comes in stages over the year. The final balance of £3750 should be paid in by the end of May.

The year starts in the middle of September and finishes on the 31st August.

IS IS RIGHT FOR ME?

This is the biggest question of all, both for you as an individual and for us as a team. If the opportunities described above appeal to you that’s a start isn’t it?

-I guess the fact that you’ve read this far means you must be pretty interested so why not take some time to pray now and ask God if it’s right for you.

-Take a look at the website to find out about the wider work of Viz-A-Viz Ministries.

-Talk to your family and those leaders that God has put in your life - that you love and respect, those whose wisdom you value.

-Ring or email us using the details below. Let’s have a chat about what the year involves and let us answer any questions you may have.

We usually find that the BEST way to find out if you are suited for this role is to fill in an application form, send it off and come to Essex for an audition. Here we would be able to see if your skills fit with what we are looking for, nothing confirms a calling like meeting the people you would be working with, discovering that you get on well together. God will often confirm that this year is exactly what you are looking for by giving a real peace as we chat and pray together and discover His will and His purpose.

God really can bring out the best in you, maybe He wants to do it through Optimum!!
